The recent BBC television programme, British Isles: A Natural History, has awakened a lot of people’s interest in a neglected aspect of Scotland’s natural heritage: geology. The Berwickshire coast has a lot to offer visitors keen to find out about this fascinating subject.
James Hutton, known as the ‘father of geology’ was a Berwickshire farmer. It was from observing the features of his land in the late 18 th century that he worked out his theories of the processes that shaped the earth. Visit Siccar Point, to the south of Pease Bay, to see the rock formations that have become known as Hutton’s Unconformity. Did you know that St Abb’s Head is actually formed from lava that poured out of volcanoes about 400 million years ago?
